Sweet Valley Confidential

Francine Pascal mentioned quite a while ago that she was working on a new book called Sweet Valley Confidential. I can’t even remember where or when I first heard about it, but it seems like it’s been in the works for a really long time. I was starting to think it was just a rumor, but then I was contacted by Sarah Jae Jones, who goes by JJ and is an editorial assistant at St. Martin’s Press.

For those who don’t know, Sweet Valley Confidential is supposed to take place when the twins and their friends are in their mid-twenties. JJ says Francine is indeed hard at work on the book and there is a tentative publication date of February 2011. I asked her what the target audience is going to be, because let’s face it: the old books are pretty bad and I wouldn’t be reading them if not for the nostalgia factor. JJ thinks Sweet Valley Confidential will be appealing to twenty-somethings and will actually be a decent standalone novel.

I gotta say, I’m kind of excited about this. For better or worse, I grew up with the damned Wakefield twins and I’ve always wondered how they turned out. Is Jessica a porn star? Is Elizabeth a nun? JJ has promised to keep me updated on what’s happening with the book, and I will in turn keep you all updated.

Maybe Todd is living with his mom at 28…and maybe he has a drinking problem because after the 765th time he and Liz broke up, she had a dirty hookup with Jeffrey and got pregnant. *hopes*

Yup, I’ll totally be buying this book. So what if I’ll be 28? 🙂

That’s okay, I’m 34 and I still have a soft spot for the twins! Maybe I need to grow up, but I’ll be buying it when (or if?) it hits the uk!

Will Tom McKay be in established relationship? Will he be in the military now that gays can (finally!) be themselves in the military?

I hope there’s a Droids concert in this book.

Here is my idea, and I did put it in my own version of Sweet Valley fanfiction of course:

    Elizabeth and Todd marry
Jessica and Nick Fox marry. I have Jessica studying to be a police officer.
Lila and Bruce marry, and they have a little girl I named Ellie.
Steven Wakefield and his friend Tony Rizzo host a radio segment the Steve and Tony show about sports and politics.
STeveN Wakefield married a girl that could look like Tricia, but her name is Tara Bell (from a very old cartoon series called Beverly HIlls Teens, trust me, Tara is such a doll and talks souther belle like).
Steven’s friend Tony marries Melissa McCormick
    Sophia Rizzo marries Patrick Morris
    Sarah Thomas marries Artie Western
Shelly Novak marries Jim the photographer
    Caroline marries her boyfriend Jerry
Amy would marry Barry, and maybe Amy continues as a cheering instructor

If the twins had babies, I’d name them Amanda and Samantha.

Any word on Sweet Valley High coming up with book 7? They stopped the rewrites at 6 and I haven’t seen anything else on a book 7.

As for myself, in reading Sweet Valley when it came out, and it was later on, it was about 1987. Biggest mistake was running out of room by 2000. I’m glad to order the book swhen I can, and only the ones I considered great books. The defecit with my dentist prevents me from having anymore books and entertainment, and my job don’t make it easier cutting my hours. I’m hoping I can talk a transfer to another location, I can’t take these awful hours at work.

How many times do you think Liz and Todd will get together? Boy, that’ll be lame! THey may as well work for Scrubs the former TV series, how many times did they hint on JD and that girl Elliot I believe getting together?

I’m sorry, it was all messed up when I posted this and had everything flipped around, because then this post was on the last page! But here is the complete list of books, which should make it a little easier to find your place.

I’ll be almost thirty when this comes out…and I can’t wait to read it! 🙂

Am I the only person who doesn’t really want Todd and Liz to end up together? Maybe if Todd had more of a personality and Liz finally admits that she’s not as loyal as she perceives to be (you know when she cheated on poor Todd in every other book)…I’d root for them.

Lila and Bruce need to be married. Seriously, that would be awesome.

And I hope some of the Senior Year characters make an appearance too! I always liked Connor.

I’ll definitely buy it. I’m doing the same thing now that you did, Shannon — reading the books from beginning to end, in order of publication. (I’m on the second Super Special now!) I did have a ridiculously detailed SVH blog chronicling it but had abandoned it — think I’ve been inspired to get back to it so I can post about SVC when it comes out! 🙂 Love your blog, by the way, and your style of posting! P.S. I will buy it, of course. I bet Liz and Todd will be married… but contemplating divorce. Gotta keep them in character! And Jessica will probably be a fashion model and/or movie star…but I’d be impressed if she became a police officer. Or how about a neurosurgeon? 😉

Whoa. Stupid question–is there a Francine Pascal? Or is she kind of like an Ann M. Martin esque figurehead now?

    [Reply]

    Shannon Reply:

You know, I really don’t know. I get the impression that she’s actually writing this particular book, but if it gets turned into a series, I guess she’ll have it ghostwritten.

  • Calico Drive February 2, 2010 at 1:28 pm

I really hope that Pascal remembers all the little people. Because of course I want to read about Liz and Jess, and if there is no Bruce or Lila I will die…but wouldn’t you really like to see what happens with people like Lois Waller, and Maria Santinelli?

    [Reply]

  • Darren February 3, 2010 at 10:50 pm

I’d like to see Lois Waller and Janet Howell as the best of friends when they reunite. Lois would’ve lost some weight. For laughs, you could say she married Peter Griffin, he he!

The Elizabeth books were the last ones in the series right? When the University books hit the twins’ sophomore year, they lost a TON of characters like Bruce, Steven and Winston so I wonder if they’ll even appear?

    [Reply]

    Shannon Reply:

Yes, from what I understand the Elizabeth series takes place after University. I haven’t read many of the University books. They got rid of Bruce? What the hell?

  • Amanda February 8, 2010 at 1:47 pm

Steven was in a few of the later SVU ones but he was a tool and only really made appearances when it was super plot convienient.

  • Angelica February 8, 2010 at 4:49 pm

My vision for the main characters would be:

Elizabeth is married to Tom Watts, but having an affair with Todd Wilkins. Or vice versa.

Jessica heads to Hollywood to make it big as a celebrity, but is an epic failure and lives in a trailer park.

Bruce and Lila married and raising a new generation of little Fowler-Patman snobs.

Steven realising he’s gay and becoming a lawyer for gay’s rights.

Hey, if we don’t like how Sweet Valley Confidential turns out, I think we should write our own stories and collate them! =)

This is so awesome. Who would have thought that this could happen. I might be the only one but I really hope that Jeremy from Senior ends up with Jessica. I know it’s a total opposite from how Jessica is in other books but they were my only reason to read Sweet Valley Senior Year. I can’t wait to read this when it comes out. 🙂

ur blog cracks me up. i would buy it too. i wanna see where they end up.

i have a few questions. my memory on the old sweet valley series is a bit foggy and i don’t remember bruce at all. can u tell me what book he makes his last appearance in? i will try to track it down.

and i might get blasted for this but i hope that a few characters from senior yr and university make it into the new book/series. it would be cool if enid was indeed a lesbian in a rel’p protesting for gay rights along side andy marsden. and i want jess and nick to be married too but not liz and todd. i will pull out my hair if i have to read about them breaking up again
