Sweet Valley High #52: White Lies

SVH052The moral of the story: If you see your friend’s boyfriend committing a crime, don’t turn him in. It’ll cause all kinds of problems.

The Big Deal: Party at Dana’s house.

Synopsis:

John Pfeifer is in love with his friend, Jennifer Mitchell, but she’s going out with Rick Andover. John is worried about her. Jessica and her friends see Jennifer and Rick at the Dairi Burger and fill A. J. in on what a piece of crap he is. Jennifer goes home that night and we find out she’s totally in love. She and Rick are planning something and she really wants to tell someone about it. She calls John and tells him she and Rick are going to run away to New York and start a band. John pours his heart out to Liz, who gives him some terrible advice about not telling on Jennifer because then she’ll hate him forever.

Jessica is supposed to go with A. J. to his uncle’s house for dinner on Friday night, but she convinces him to reschedule so they can make it to Dana’s party. A few days later, A. J. sees her flirting with the soccer players during practice. He seems annoyed but doesn’t say anything.

Still brooding over John’s problem (ugh), Liz decides she doesn’t really feel like going to Dana’s party. Besides, Jeffrey can’t go anyway because some relatives are in town. She goes to the bookstore and stops at the Dairi Burger on her way home. John is there and they see Rick Andover leave. They follow him and see him rob the music store where he works. John says he’s going to call the police, but Liz tells him he should call the store owner first because if he calls the cops and there’s a logical explanation, Jennifer will find out and be mad at John. Liz gives the worst advice ever.

Jessica comes home from Dana’s party all aglow because she’s so in love with A. J. She brags to Liz that A. J. will do anything she wants. Liz is distracted thinking about Rick Andover and doesn’t really answer, so Jessica thinks she’s just jealous because she couldn’t make Jeffrey change his plans and take her to the party. A few days later, A. J. sits down at the lunch table just as Jessica, Lila and Amy are discussing who the best kisser at school is. That afternoon, he asks Liz if Jessica is getting bored with him.

Jennifer waits for two hours for Rick to show up at their rendezvous point and then finally admits defeat and goes home. The next morning, her father tells her Rick has been arrested for burglary. Jennifer thinks he must have been framed because he would never do such a thing. Her parents tell her she’s not allowed to see Rick anymore, and Jennifer gets it into her head that her father had listened to her phone call to John and then framed Rick so she couldn’t run away with him. She tells him she hates him for ruining her life, then runs up to her room. I think Jennifer is insane.

Jennifer spends the next few days being a total bitch to her father. She talks to John and tells him her suspicions. He wants to tell her the truth so she doesn’t go on hating her father, but he can’t bring himself to do it because he wants her to love him or whatever. And he shouldn’t have to, I think. Rick was arrested on an anonymous tip, anyone could have seen him breaking into the store. Jennifer’s just being weird. She gets called to the principal’s office, where she’s told her father is in the hospital. John offers to drive her there, but she refuses to go see him. Total bitch. John and Jennifer start spending a lot of time together because she needs someone to talk to during her I Hate Dad phase.

John finally talks it all out with Liz and she drives him over to Jennifer’s house. He tells her the truth and she’s totally pissed at him for turning Rick in and for letting her be so mad at her father. I hate Jennifer. Now that Jennifer doesn’t hate her dad anymore, she wants to go see him, so Liz drives her and John to the hospital, where they find out Mr. Mitchell is having emergency bypass surgery. Jennifer punches John in the chest and tells him to leave. Liz takes him home.

The next day, Liz finds out from her father that Mr. Mitchell got through surgery just fine. She takes John to the hospital to talk to Jennifer, but when they get there he’s too nervous. Liz goes in herself, buys some flowers and gives them to Jennifer, pretending they’re from John. Jennifer has had a chance to realize what a weirdo she’s been and she wants to see John. Liz goes outside and sends him in. And they all lived happily ever after.

Quotes:

Elizabeth didn’t know what to say. Normally, she respected people’s feelings and gave them their privacy.

Riiight.

[Elizabeth] was as responsible as John for turning Rick Andover in. The only reason she hadn’t said anything to Jennifer was because she had assumed John had straightened everything out.

You bitch, you’re the one who told John to call the store owner instead of the cops so Jennifer wouldn’t be mad at him. My hatred for Elizabeth Wakefield grows stronger every day.

The Cover: Oh hey, another gorgeous blonde chick. Awesome. I don’t know if the guy is supposed to be Rick or John, but I’m guessing Rick because he’s wearing a black shirt.

you know, every time i think i hate elizabeth wakefield as much as i possibly can, she shows me how untrue that is.

    charles ingalls=liz wakefield=brandon walsh.

i would rather hang out with jessica every day for the rest of my life than deal with liz for an hour.

yeah, sometimes i need to stop and remind myself it’s just a book… 🙂

Oh my god, she is SO Brandon Walsh. Humorless and boring and lecture-y. With a bitchy twin sister who’s a thousand times more fun to watch/read.

Liz is less of a doormat and more likable as a 12 year old in the Sweet Valley Twins series – seriously! From book #1, the ghostwriters try hard to make her less smug and less Ms-Goody-Two-Shoes. Same with Amy Sutton. She’s a completely different character, too. 😉

Might I add Reverend Eric Camden to that list?

Somebody else hates Charles Ingalls?! I love you! All I ever hear about him is what a perfect wonderful person he is and that more people should be like him. I thought I was the only one who hated him and thought he was a total Gary Stu!

I’m so glad you included that Liz quote about her “normally respecting others privacy.” I LOL’ed for hours.
